Kim McDermott

Kim McDermott was born on the west coast of Tasmania in 1953 and has spent 40 years as a miner, prospector, bushman and mining company director.

He became stranded with his brother Ged for eighteen days in the Port Davey region of South-West Tasmania.

His serialized account in the local newspaper of their adventure and rescue became very popular and a successful writing career was born.

McDermott's first two books, 'Last of the Wildcats'and 'Dougherty's Way' trace fact, folklore and the everyday lives of the people of the west coast as well as the sufferings and privations of Tasmanias past and present. Both books have been sell-outs and are currently being reprinted.

With a wealth of knowledge passed down from a family of convicts, Huon piners and whalers, plus his many experiences, McDermott manages to capture the true spirit of Tasmania, lost to most in the drudgery of factual documentation.
