I was made in Puerto Rico. My dad never left the island, yet my mother, while pregnant decided to move to Brooklyn, NY where I was born. Things got really confusing from there and my childhood is probably comparable with most people who are in jail. I promise that if you read my blogs, novels, stories and poems you will understand.
Despite my circumstances, I am a High School English Teacher who enjoys studying literature with his students. I moved to Puerto Rico in the early 90’s believing I would be accepted and loved as this was the land where my ancestry was rooted. Didn’t happen. I had to learn to understand my culture all over again from a different perspective. I noticed early on the differences in education and the thought process of a people who were sure of their identity in every way possible, except politically. For the first time I learned exactly what it meant to be and live in a colony. This was the inspiration for my first novel, Forgotten Colony.
Everything I write is rooted in my need to teach. As I try and entertain, I also try and bring what I’ve learned into the story so that the reader learns and hopefully doesn’t notice. If you have, then I apologize. Transmitting a deeper meaning is and always should be the purpose of what it is you love to do. Writing not only has saved me from my circumstances, it has given me a place where I can share the inner most secrets of my soul. Every word I bleed unto the written page is a confession. Do with that as you may.
