Sandrine Beillard was born in Morocco, expatriate home of her
parents and great-grandparents. From her mother’s and
grandmother’s side, she inherited a strong character and an abiding
regard for other people. She owes to her father her common sense
and practical realism. Her life-style illustrates her closeness to the
natural world and her concern for its preservation.
She left Rabat, city of her roots, to pursue higher education in
France and Germany, where living abroad inspired her appetite for
travel and adventure.
Hong Kong was where she made her first acquaintance with Asia,
initially for a short stop only. This turned into a stay of many years
in the territory, which became her new home, a period which
reinforced her enthusiasm for discovery and photography.
This place of residence and the holidays afforded by her post as
teacher at the French International School provided the ideal
opportunity to criss-cross our vast, ever-changing planet. It was a
time of many friendships. Thanks to one of these, she has the
honour of a preface to her book by the writer Chow Ching Lie, best-
selling author of Le Palanquin des larmes, virtuoso pianist and
grandmother of two of her pupils.
A true globe-trotter, Sandrine Beillard travelled through
many countries on foot, by bike, motorbike, bus and train, but
always in the manner of the local people and always as close as
possible to nature. Yak milk breakfasts looking out onto the highest
summits, nights spent in Mongol yurts, Annapurna base camp, cold
sweats in Pakistan, scuba dives in an enchanting underwater
universe, magical moments on film sets and advertisement studios,
a world of experiences stimulating self-knowledge and an
appreciation of the infinite riches of meeting others. These are
experiences that also teach values and give life its worth.
Throughout these years, through her travels, her varied and
enriching encounters and the contact with her pupils, she broadened
her horizons, her own culture and her thoughts.
Sandrine Beillard speaks several languages, including the language
of gesture and look, which can sometimes say it all.
Her desire to share her passion, her experience and the pleasures of
genuine travel have given rise to a book fittingly illustrated with her
own photographs. It may just offer the means to discover, or
rediscover, our common humanity and thus strive for greater
tolerance and a better mutual understanding in a new world.
