Born and raised in the UK, Steve Braker grew up living in the coastal county of Cornwall in the Southern part of England where one could always find him near the water - on the beach, surfing, and fishing or sailing, and rock climbing.
At the age of 21, he decided to travel to Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Borneo, where he first worked as an English teacher and learned fluent Thai in the process. In Borneo, he climbed mount Kinabalu the highest peak in Borneo’s Crocker range of mountains.
When he was finished in the Far East, he decided to tour India and visited the Taj Mahal and spent several months traveling around the country. A few years later, he traveled and worked in the Coastal town of Banjul in the Gambia, West African for several months.
On his return to the UK, Steve decided that he should use his skills honed in Bangkok and start the Leicester Square School of English in Soho, in the middle of the West End of London. After many years of hard work, the school became part of the prestigious British Council group of schools.
The travel bug never left Steve and in 2000 he decided to sell the school and move with his young family consisting of his wife and four kids to Mtwapa, Kilifi in Kenya within the coast of East Africa. His love of the ocean was once again fulfilled as he sailed the coast in a multitude of different sailing boats, working as a captain and taking diving clients to out of the way places along the coast and to the Tanzanian islands of Pemba, Mafia, and Jewe and up to the borders of Somalia.
His love of boats and business allowed him to take up the opportunity to open a boatyard where he specialized in building and repairing wood sailing ships called Dhows. He owned a 35-foot open deck Dhow which he took on many adventures along the coast. Sailing from Lamu in the North to Pemba in Mozambique.
As an avid diver, Steve trained to become a P.A.D.I. open water dive instructor and has taught many students over the years, he has over one thousand dives under his belt. All of Steve’s four kids are avid divers and keen on water sports.
Years later, Steve divorced his wife and later married his second wife, a Children and Women rights lawyer with two children. They currently reside in Mombasa, Kenya.
Steve’s love of writing has grown and grown over the years as he interacts with the local community both at business and personal levels. He loves to pull on his experiences and develop them into fast-paced action thrillers. He has a good working knowledge of several of the languages spoken along the coast of East Africa and loves to barter in the markets in Swahili. He continually lives to explore areas he has never been and to bring the adventures to life through the characters in his books.
When not writing Steve can be found following his other passion conserving the mangroves or working on marine cleanups.
