Rafael Roca

Rafael Roca has been an English teacher for more than twenty years and he has taught computing, as well. Based on his experience he has developed very good teaching materials, and one outstanding example is the book "Pronunciación del inglés: Guía práctica para hispanohablantes", addressed to Spanish speakers, students and teachers alike.

The decision to write this book sprang from his struggle to master English pronunciation rules in his student's years when no proper works on the subject were available in Spain. He says in the preface of the book:

"The problem was the rules, or the apparent absence of them: how was it possible that words like team /ti:m/, near /nɪə/, wear /weə/, learn /lɜ:n/, great /greɪt/, head /hed/ and heart /hɑ:t/ sounded differently when all of them had the same vowel sequence 'ea'? The answer, quoting some famous Gauls, was obvious: 'These Britons are crazy!'”

Although a bit of madness is ok, when you know the rules and the exceptions your sanity is better preserved.

La respuesta, parafraseando a unos conocidos galos, era obvia: '¡Están locos estos ingleses!'"

Aunque un poco de locura está bien, cuando conoces las reglas y las excepciones tu salud mental se mantiene a salvo.
