Robert Michel was born in Boulder, Colorado, a descendant of Denver pioneers. His family moved from Colorado for his father's work, but his mother brought him back when, in the early 1970s, she and his father divorced. They moved to Eldorado Springs to live near his grandparents, Jack and Mabel Fowler, where he helped out around the summer resort during his school years. He wrestled, and earned a scholarship to the Colorado School of Mines. After graduating, he worked in manufacturing and project management until he wrote his debut novel. Looking back, Robert sees how his grandfather influenced him as he grew up. It was there, in Eldorado Springs, where Robert learned how to become a man.
