Ryan J. Johnson

Ryan Johnson is Associate Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Elon University. Ryan is author of four monographs -- Deleuze, A Stoic (Edinburgh UP, 2020), The Deleuze Lucretius Encounter (Edinburgh UP, 2016), Three American Hegels (Rowman & Littlefield, 2024), and Phenomenology of Black Spirit (Edinburgh UP, 2022) -- and co-editor of four several volumes, including Contemporary Encounters with Ancient Metaphysics (Edinburgh UP, 2017), Nietzsche & Epicurus (Bloomsbury 2020), and Contemporary Encounters with Ancient Practice (Edinburgh UP, 2024).

Ryan will publish his co-translation (with Jared Bly) of a book of French philosophy by Émile Bréhier (Edinburgh UP, 2025), and is working on a pair of books that philosophically improvise John Coltrane -- one called The John Brown Suite and another called A Love Spinoza. He is also writing papers on Kierkegaard and Toni Morrison, and another on Kafka and Afrosurrealism. All his classes occur outside and he loves trains.
