Anna Deeny

ANNA DEENY MORALES is a Latina writer who grew up between Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. Her works in opera and poetry have been supported by the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, among others. In 2025, she was a Visiting Fellow at Trinity College, Dublin, to work on her new opera, Home Come Home, with music by Brian Arreola. Her operas include Las Místicas de México (IN Series); ZAVALA-ZAVALA: an opera in v cuts (UNC Charlotte, IN Series); La Paloma at the Wall (IN Series); and Cecilia Valdés (IN Series). An NEA Fellow for her translation of Tala by Nobel Laureate Gabriela Mistral, her translations of works by Raúl Zurita include Sky Below (Northwestern UP); Dreams for Kurosawa (arrow as arow); and Purgatory (UC Press). Other works in translation include Mercedes Roffé's Floating Lanterns (Shearsman) and Alejandra Pizarnik's Diana's Tree (Shearsman). Forthcoming editions include Nicanor Parra's Ecopoems, Storm, & Some Fringe Benefits (New Directions); and Amanda Berenguer's Identity of Certain Fruit (Zero Point Press). Her essays and translations of poetry by Marosa di Giorgio, Malú Urriola, Mirta Rosenberg, and Diana Bellessi, among others, have appeared in anthologies and journals including Pinholes in the Night: Essential Poems from Latin America, The Paris Review, Mandorla, BOMB, Almost Island, and The Harvard Review. She holds degrees in piano performance and literature from Shepherd University and Dartmouth College; studied Directing at the Academy of Dramatic Arts, Rome; and received a PhD in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from the University of California, Berkeley. Deeny Morales is a Fellow in the Humanities at the Center for Latin American Studies, Georgetown University.
