No Trees down Our Street

I served an apprenticeship in the Sunderland marine engineering works of Sir William Doxford and Sons, and afterwards worked as a design draughtsman in the Research and Development Office. There followed a further two years in the drawing office of a London consulting engineers on power station design before, at the age of twenty-eight, I changed careers completely and trained as a teacher of English. As an external student I obtained a BA Honours degree in English Literature from London University, taught at Schools in Norwich, the Cotswolds and Bristol, and retired as Head of English in a large comprehensive School. My wife and I have lived in Andalucia for twenty years now and love it.

I’m interested in walking – done the whole of the Pennine Way – DIY, football, reading biographies and non-fiction, after years of teaching Literature.

I wrote ’No Trees Down Our Street’ thirty years ago because Christopher Street , my extended family, my close friends and neighbours, influenced not only my childhood, but also the rest of my life; and the book has lain in a drawer all that time until friends persuaded me to publish it. So, after merely adding another thirty years to the book’s memory span, here it is. Hope you enjoy it!
