Bob Buckley

Early on Bob haunted used bookstores to collect and “devour” bundled vintage copies of Astounding Science Fiction, Planet Stories, Startling Stories, and Thrilling Wonder Stories. They didn’t taste that great, but the science fiction and fantasy stories published behind the garish covers, with their monstrous aliens and beautiful scenes of strange planets, were fascinating. Inspired to try writing on his own, he sold his first short story about a pair of life seeking automated rovers on Venus to Analog Science Fact & Fiction while in college.

His first novel, which takes place on a newly colonized Venus with aerostat cities drifting in the habitable zone of the dense cloud deck, “World in the Sky” was serialized in Analog Science Fact & Fiction several years later. Many of his short fiction pieces have been published in Analog magazine, where he was honored to receive the coveted cover spot several times, and in OMNI magazine. Several of the novelettes have gone on to be anthologized in hardback and paperback, including a favorite story: The Runners, an adventure that accidentally sends the space tug of a team of amazed Jovian gas miners back to the Cretaceous terminal event.

His favorite topics for stories are paleontology, planetary science, Venus, and most particularly Mars.

Bob is technical publications manager at a global satellite communications provider headquartered in Carlsbad, California.

He is a member of the Planetary Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Bob lives in California with his wife, two dogs: a rescued Australian Shepherd named Allie and a Beagle mix named Eva, a black cat named Slither, and an ancient desert tortoise named Tutor.
