J.D. Howard was born in West Seattle, raised in Everett, Washington, and graduated in 1973 from EHS. He has been an avid student of history and literature for over 50 years and has created a successful series of detailed and entertaining historical fiction. He currently lives in the foothills of Snohomish County and is the proud father of two children. His works included: Both Sides of The Wish (2013), Sawdust Empire (2016), The Pride of Monte Cristo (2019) Paper Highway (2020) French Peter - Journey to Hat Island (2021), and Before Woodstock - The Sky River Rock Festival & Lighter Than Air Fair (2025).
Sawdust Empire won the Malstrom Award for the preservation of Snohomish County history and the Brown Award for the preservation of The City of Everett History. Sawdust Empire was also named to Kirkus Reviews Best Books of 2016. The Pride of Monte Cristo won a Special Commendation from The League of Snohomish County Heritage Organizations in 2019 that acknowledged a significant influence on Snohomish County history.
