As a child, I knew I wanted to help people who suffered from illness. I wanted to be available to them, comfort them, and help them to good health. After college, pursuing this dream, I received my medical degree after attending Creighton Medical School and my board certification as an allergist and immunologist after a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. Then, I practiced consultant allergy and immunology for 40 years, treating patients referred by family doctors, pediatricians, internists, and other medical specialists.
One group of patients that suffered unusual symptoms fascinated me. They reacted to many common foods suffering symptoms like progressive loss of thinking, planning, memory, and self-care. They had dementia! I was delighted when these abilities returned as they followed a diet I devised.
Five years after my retirement I realized that I was experiencing the same progressive worsening of my thinking, planning, and memory; I was suffering from dementia! As I changed my diet and recovered these mental abilities, I realized I needed to share the good news that dementia and other diseases—also diet-caused—are controllable. So, I started to assemble my Retaining the Mind Series that now has two books, Escape From Dementia and Freedom and Independence.
