I advise many people in my day job as a consultant occupational health and safety practitioner in UK workplaces; and, late at night and at weekends, sees me writing for different audiences such as children, cruisers, and other worthy people, using various pen names to match each subject.
NON FICTION
I am a registered specialist practitioner in both occupational health and safety and run my own website, www.workingwellsolutions.com and on all the usual social media platforms too of Twitter, LinkedIn and have plenty of videos on my YouTube channel - the most popular being the HAVs one and "What is Occupational Health". I also have many free resources available on my website as well as loads of blogs on current day issues such as fit notes and SEQOHS.
I have been in the occupational health and safety business for over 20 years and worked in many different industry sectors, including the NHS, Local Government, BUPA Wellness, Premier Foods, and manufacturing industries such as making the wind blades for the beautifully artistic looking turbines.
I started as a practitioner and now advise companies at the highest level, such as High Speed 2, and offer consultancy to companies on strategic issues or mentoring to those needing help and guidance.
My books on health and safety are technically accurate and give the 'right' information. I spend hours researching and scouring information sources, reports, press releases, relevant legislation and current practices; making sure that my work is solid and evidence or research-based. No crackpot ideas here.
I like my textbooks and information to be chatty and fun. I am passionate about simple language where possible and work hard to engage those who usually find reading about health and safety boring and too technical. Sometimes that can't be avoided but where it is, I will.
I have many published articles from the OH Magazine to the IOSH website where I drafted Managing Occupational Health (a free download). Currently, I am writing a book on occupational health in construction based on my experience in Constructing Better Health and working with the HSE on vibration in the workplace and dust. I also provided information for the Plant Operators Good practice guide on medical fitness with CPA and attended CONIAC which is chaired by the HSE with many industries represented.
I assisted IOSH in drafting the occupational health section of the CPD project and the HSE on their Maturity Index.
FICTION
In between, I write my blogs and other writing projects, the most recent of which being my first fiction book about board games who come to life when the family goes to bed and their struggle to survive in a world of high technology. If you haven't already, read "Games People Play," and watch Miss Scarlett fight the evil iPad to save her two disintegrating families.
If you have any comments on my style or content in the books - hopefully positive, but OK if it's not, contact me at jane.coombs@workingwellsolutions.com.
Be great to hear from you.
