Lee Michael Altman was raised in Washington State. His artistic influences were the nature mysticism of the painters Mark Tobey and Morris Graves and the poet Theodore Roethke. In the early 60s he studied poetry with Elizabeth Bishop and Galway Kinnell. After living in San Francisco in the late 60s during the artistic cultural revolution, he traveled to Mexico, Europe and the American Southwest. He received his BFA at the University of Washington, and completed his MFA at Stanford University where he studied with the painters and printmakers Nathan Oliveira and Frank Lobdell.
