Born in New York but raised on the beautiful island of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands, April J. Lisbon, Ed.D. has worked tirelessly to advocate for the needs of children. Her passion for children and families growing up as a teenager helped Dr. Lisbon embark on a journey to help families and caregivers relieve fears associated with caring for children with exceptional needs.
As a 20 plus year veteran school psychologist and parent of a child on the Autism Spectrum, Dr. Lisbon has learned how challenging it can be raising a child with exceptional needs. With limited school and community resources, Dr. Lisbon has felt like she has been fighting ongoing battles with minimal relief in sight.
Because of her own lived experiences, Dr. Lisbon believes in helping families of autistic individuals and other neurodiverse learners identify, clarify, and share their stories without guilt or shame. She believes that by giving families their ‘voices’ back, they have the power to shift the course of their destinies. One way that Dr. Lisbon believes in helping families find their voices is by advocating for autistic individuals in the workplace. By increasing the quality and quantity of autistic individuals hired in organizations, Dr. Lisbon believes that these organizations will unlock the benefits of hiring and retaining these individuals.
Dr. Lisbon is an up and coming speaker who has spoken on several stages within her local area and various states. She has also appeared as a guest on several podcast shows on iHeart Radio and Apple Podcasts. As an international award-winning author, Dr. Lisbon has authored three books geared towards families raising children with exceptional needs. She has been seen in the Washington Post, NBC News, Business Insider, Forbes, Autism Parenting Magazine, The TODAY Show Parenting, Family Circle Magazine, and several other national and international media outlets.
