Simon Smith is an academic specialising in Shakespeare and early modern literature. He has written extensively on music and drama, playhouse culture, and the history of sensation and the senses. Past awards include the University English Book Prize and the Shakespeare's Globe Book Award. He has provided historical research, consultancy and expert advice on a range of topics to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the BBC, and the Independent, as well as occasional musical direction for historically-informed staging experiments. Beyond the early modern, his interests include violas, sustainable agriculture, brewing, and (recreational) walking.
He is Senior Lecturer in Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama at the Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon and the Department of English Literature, University of Birmingham.
