“My goal as a designer is to make people think, or at the very least, to consider the possibilities.”
Tracy Purtscher has been creating garments her entire life, beginning when her father taught her to sew at a very young age. By the age of seven, she was mending clothing for the members of her large family of seven children; a few years later she was making most of her own clothes. In high school, Tracy taught herself how to crochet with a paper clip and a piece of string while in detention. Knitting, however, eluded her for many years until she discovered
a vintage magazine with a how-to section for continental knitting that finally made things click.
Since she took up knitting needles, Tracy Purtscher has been designing stunning garments. Her designs have appeared in numerous publications, including knit.purl, Simply Knitting, Noro, and Vogue Knitting. In 2013, she was a finalist on the Fiber Factor, a Project Runway-esque
knitwear-design reality web series. In 2015, she won a Chanel-inspired design contest in Vogue Knitting magazine for Burke, a chic pullover with an allover mosaic pattern and unique zipper detail. Tracy also runs the knitting blog Stringativity, which features her designs and musings on knitting and creativity.
