V G Gallagher

The author is an 85-year-old New Yorker endowed with a marvelous memory inherited from his father John Aloysius Gallagher, fortified with a lifetime of records and pictures to keep his memory refreshed. Although lacking a formal college degree, he graduated from William Cullen Bryant High School in Astoria, New York City, in 1950 and went on to one semester of college before entering active army service as a National Guard soldier during the Korean War. His formal education was sporadic and as a veteran he took advantage of the G. I. Bill and went on to attend, but never completed, college. As his career advanced, requiring him to relocate as he grew, the Gallagher’s lived in New York, Chicago, Cincinnati and Pennsylvania. Since his childhood the author has been an avid reader of fact over fiction, which he always found to be much more interesting. He and his wife are library advocates and are familiar faces in libraries in both Pennsylvania and Florida.

Upon returning from his service in Korea he married his wife, Leboria Theresa Reres Gallagher -- “Lee” -- his love of a lifetime; they met while he was stationed in Brooklyn when they both were only 20. They have two sons, John Andrew Gallagher, an award-winning filmmaker, author and educator, and Vincent Gregory Gallagher, Jr., a pastor, attorney, and more recently, a sailing enthusiast who is currently living on his sailboat with his wife of 30 years, Amy Patricia Scheidel Gallagher. Together they are fulfilling their dream to spend their middle years at sea in their seaworthy yacht sailing the Caribbean after having raised three children to maturity. Their daughter Catherine Alyssa Gallagher Peters is a school teacher, son John Francis is an A student in his senior college year, and son Michael Vincent also an honored college student. The author’s business career in sales and marketing has spanned a half century. At the age of 36 he left the corporate world as the Medical Marketing Director of The Bendix Corporation to enter into his own business endeavors with his wife Lee. They built their own employment business in the Philadelphia area and in 14 years, with six office locations in the Delaware Valley, sold to H. R. Block-owned Personnel Pool of America. Their original 10-year plan took 14 years to accomplish and they received the exact cash reward the author had in his initial business plan. They took a year’s sabbatical and Lee suggested a real estate sales job would be fun. This opened a career of 30 years as commissioned sales agents with Re/Max on Philadelphia’s Main Line. Lee is mentioned in Who’s Who in Real Estate. A period of high income and much fun dealing with countless people from many diverse international cultures enriched their appreciation for the humanities … many whom today are their best friends. The author retired at age 75 and has spent the years enjoying reading and adventures in the fields, streams, forests and mountains which he has always loved, while cherishing the closeness of his family.

Both Lee and Vince look back on their humble beginnings and show their respect and admiration for those from all walks of life, and from those faraway places we hear so much about in today’s instant information era. They enjoy good health for octogenarians and thank God for their blessings. The author carries in his smart phone pictures of his wife throughout all stages of her life and he still sees her as his princess and even more beautiful than ever.
