Boris Karpa is a historian of naval and military affairs. He writes on the early American republic, maritime strategy, and the Russo-Ukrainian War. He holds a PhD in history from Tel Aviv University (2021), where his dissertation looked at how Russian and British experience shaped Thomas Jefferson's naval strategy.
His first monograph, Gunboats and Empires: Jeffersonian Naval Policy and the Global Age of Sail (Casemate, 2026), grew out of that research. His next book, The Siege of Sloviansk: The Battle That Sparked Putin's War on Ukraine, is forthcoming from Frontline Books in 2027.
Since 2021 he has hosted interviews with historians and authors for the New Books Network. He has reviewed books for Marine Corps History, the Journal of Advanced Military Studies, and Army History. He teaches a course on the rise of American navalism, from Jefferson's gunboats to Mahan, at Free Moscow University.
He works in English, Russian, and Hebrew. He also writes science fiction.
