Matthew Bengtson

Matthew Bengtson is a versatile pianist, fortepianist and harpsichordist with wide-ranging interests in keyboard music of all eras. Some special interests include historical performance practice, early keyboards, contemporary music, and the music of the early 20th century, especially that of Alexander Scriabin and Karol Szymanowski. He performs widely as both soloist and collaborator. Among his numerous CD recordings, his complete Scriabin piano sonatas on Romeo Records has won widespread critical acclaim, and been likened to legendary performances by Horowitz and Richter. The Alexander Scriabin Companion, a three-way collaboration with musicologist Lincoln Ballard and the late pianist, author and critic John Bell Young, is his first book, devoted to some of his favorite repertoire. Mr. Bengtson is Assistant Professor of Piano Literature at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance, where he teaches piano, fortepiano, and courses on the piano's repertoire, history, and culture.
