When I wrote 'Baby Daze,' I wasn't setting out to write a poetry book. Almost all of the poems came to me unexpectedly, while up for the 3am feeds!
After years of waiting and hoping (my husband and I were together for 15 years before we had our son), Matthew was born four and a half weeks early and very quickly! He wasn't going to keep us waiting any longer! With my contractions starting at 1.50pm at work and leaving work at 3.10pm I had him in hospital at 5.34pm - hence the poems 'Premature,' 'Our Little Miracle' and 'You're Here.' Becoming a mum at 40 has certainly been a challenge, but I wouldn't swap parenthood for anything and we feel very lucky to have our little family.
I've found when sharing the poems with friends and family that they've evoked feelings and responses from parents and grandparents of all ages as they recall and recount memories of early days with their own children. The poems are from the heart, based on real experience and in a form easily accessible to a mainstream audience. They explore the emotional highs and the trickier moments of being parents to a baby. Comments about some of my poems include 'any mum will empathise with this,' 'it really gives the feel for that baby bubble you find yourself in,' 'tear to the eye stuff' and 'I love the way the short sentences give it pace and reflect the mum's stress and hurry.'
