Ian Wilkinson is Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University. He received the Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Originally from Australia, he has lectured and conducted research in Australia, New Zealand and the United States. His research focuses on school and classroom contexts for literacy learning and the cognitive consequences for students. He has conducted research on the impact of classroom talk on students' reading comprehension and argument literacy and the implications for professional development of teachers, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences, U.S. Department of Education.
Dr. Wilkinson has published numerous research articles and chapters. As part of his federally funded work, in collaboration with Drs. Anna Soter and Karen Murphy, he developed ‘Quality Talk’—a general approach to conducting classroom discussions to promote students’ high-level comprehension of text (http://quality-talk.org). He served as Co-Editor of Reading Research Quarterly from 2006-2012.
