My name is John R Wheeling. My family has recently returned from the beautiful country of my wife's birthplace, Namibia. We spent twelve years there immersed in the culture and wildlife of the country which I related in my annual Namibian guidebook, Leisure Times Namibia.
I now write during the day, and coach in the evenings at the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy where I coach my two daughters along with the elite gymnasts of Oklahoma, plus my top gymnast from my time in Namibia, Emile Pitt, who decided to join us Stateside.
In addition to Leisure Times and The Infinite Gap, I have also written With Footfalls of Shadow under the name of Donogan Sawyer and a children's book by Professsor Schweinstein, About a Billion.
I was born in 1970 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania where I grew up. I used my University experience to travel the country, attending schools in Pennsylvania, Nevada, New Mexico and Florida. I paid my way through most of my University days as a gymnastics coach.
Shortly after graduating with a degree in English education, an unusual opportunity was offered to me to go to Namibia to help develop their men's gymnastics program. I stayed in Namibia for a year where I met my wife, Dana.
We subsequently went to England where I studied for a Master's in Shakespeare and Renaissance culture, and my wife practiced physiotherapy. We managed to rack up a lot of debt during our travels, and Dana and I decided to join my family business to pay off the debt and save a little money, so I became a stock broker for seven years.
While in America we had three children, a son, Kieren, and twin girls, Madeleine and Jocelyn. Shortly after the girls were born, we decided to move back to Namibia. I maintained a modest consulting company in the States which sustained us for our first several years while I launched Leisure Times Magazine, an annual guidebook about Namibia, and has evolved into the website, www.LTNamibia.com, and has led to some other projects, including writing the newspaper for the Dome sports centre in Namibia, where I coached gymnastics, including the two best male gymnasts in the country. One of those gymnasts, Emile Pitt, has joined us in the States and is training at the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy.
