Anthony P Kontos

Dr. Kontos is Director of Research for the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program and an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Department of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Pittsburgh. He has specialized in concussion research for the past 12 years and has over 175 professional publications. He received his doctoral degree in kinesiology/sport psychology from Michigan State University where he received master's degrees in counseling psychology and exercise science and completed an internship in counseling psychology. He completed his B.A. in psychology at Adrian College, where he was a four-year starter on the men's soccer team. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, Dr. Kontos spent 11 years at Humboldt State University and the University of New Orleans, where he was a professor and founding director of concussion research and outreach programs. He is also a fellow in the American Psychological Association (APA), Associated for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology, and Eastern Psychological Association; and served as President (2015) of APA's Division 47- Society for Sport, Exercise & Performance Psychology. He attended the 2014 White House Healthy Kids & Safe Sports Concussion Summit, and co-directed the 2015 Targeted Evaluation & Active Management Approach to Treating Concussion meeting in Pittsburgh, PA. He served as Chair of the Sub-acute Subgroup on the NIH Sports Concussion Common Data Elements working group. He has played and coached soccer his entire life, and enjoys spending time hiking, fly fishing, paddling, surfing, skiing, traveling, and playing any sport involving a ball with his wife Danna and their two children, Constantine and Marina. He has also experienced firsthand a few concussions of his own while surfing and playing soccer.
