I enjoy reading, public speaking and writing. My mother instilled a deep thirst for reading in me at an early age. My favorite areas of reading include western & eastern philosophy, Buddhism, classical rhetoric & oratory and books about military strategy, political theory and martial arts. I also enjoy books about Consciousness, quantum physics and biographies. Though primarily a non-fiction reader, Fyodor Dostoevsky holds the number one spot among fiction writers for me.

Educationally, my background is in speech communication, rhetoric and philosophy. (B.A. Speech Communication: Rhetorical Studies concentration) My thoughts have been influenced by several western philosophical traditions. Among these influences are: the ancient Greeks, the Stoics and Existentialist. Emerson and Thoreau, from the Transcendentalist tradition, are also on my bookshelf. Though the West had captured my mind early on in life, for spiritual nourishment I lean towards eastern traditions. Some of the eastern influences on my thinking include the writings from Yoga masters, Vedanta philosophy, Miyomoto Musashi, Lao Tzu, Sun Tzu as well as Tibetan and especially Chan Buddhism.

I was introduced to meditation through martial arts training at age 11. Both remain essential practices in my daily life and enhance my practice as a Buddhist. I also enjoy long walks and may be seen with my walking stick taking 10+ mile meditation walks through suburban areas or out in nature. In addition to authoring books I engage in public speaking and host a podcast: Derek Fletcher Show. Along with my public speaking, and counseling services, I serve as Founder & Chief Instructor of Mind Mastery Dojo.
