Robert Arley wrote many scripts for ITV children’s programming. He devised the Saturday morning entertainment segments which evolved into ‘Tiswas’. He developed the comic drama series ‘Minty’ about a schoolgirl who swaps places with a pop star. Then directed a film looking behind-the-scenes (in Hollywood and Japan) at the ‘Ghostbusters’ movies and animation series. He became the Producer of Children’s ITV packaging and promotions, spending busy days with a vast array of stars ranging from Kylie Minogue to Roland Rat.

Robert then moved to the BBC as a scriptwriter for comedy shows, especially Pebble Mill’s popular ‘Call my Bluff’’. He next became a location director for factual programmes including ‘The Antiques Roadshow’, ‘Music Live’ and ‘Top Gear’.

His production company, Splash TV was commissioned to make a film of testimony of World War Two military veterans for Worcestershire Council, supported by the Armed Forces Community Covenant – ‘We did our bit’.

This project inspired Robert to research and write a fresh history of military flying during the war years – ‘Of sons and skies’.

Robert now came down to earth and returned to his roots – children’s entertainment. For many years he had carried a fanciful notion in his head – could a school science student set up a crazy experiment against his teacher’s better judgement that might microwave objects to become smaller?

What if events in the laboratory caused that teacher to become the “object” zapped by the apparatus?
