William Heyman was born and raised in Central California. He developed a great love and appreciation for nature and for Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in particular, which his family had visited often during his childhood years. He raced small sailboats with his father, Ed Heyman, also a self-published writer, though he enjoyed a quiet sail with family or friends much more than competing.
He graduated from high school in three years and began attending Junior College in Columbia, CA in the late 70's, where he concentrated on Geology and the Physical Sciences. After this, he transferred to UC Santa Cruz, where he studied Environmental Science and writing for a semester.
The great beauty of Yosemite drew him in, however, and he moved there in 1981 to begin a ten year odyssey, hiking the canyons of the valley, photographing, composing music, and exploring the High Country. He returned to his hometown in 1991 to join his family's business, complete his educational goals, and to raise a family.
William holds an MBA from the California State University, and has two books currently in print. He has had his poetry and short stories included in several collections over the years. In 2014, he had a story included in an anthology, honoring the Yosemite Centennial published by Yosemite Conservancy entitled, "Inspiring Generations - 150 Years, 150 Stories in Yosemite." The story is titled, "Butterfly in the Canyon," and is about an ethereal experience he had, while hiking off trail in Indian Canyon. He was one of the hundred that were chosen out of at least a thousand submissions.
William ran a blog from 2010 to 2014 that he named "Fifty Years On Planet Earth," from which he derived some of the content for his first book, "Meanderings In Thought And Nature." This work contains accounts from his adventures, living in Yosemite for 10 years, and some of the poetry he'd written over a forty year period.
He is currently working on several writing projects, including a fiction book that is anthropomorphic in nature.
His newest book, "Meanderings in Love and Nature," is about his experiences when he first moved to Yosemite in 1981. He combines this with poetry about the love he has found in recent years, along with his appreciation for nature. The work also contains other short fictional stories and insights.
William continues to live in the Central Valley and enjoys composing original music, reading, writing, and participating in his community.
