My father, Joseph Wyson, was raised in an orphanage from the age of five, having lost both parents. For the next 10 years his physical needs were provided for, but he always yearned for the love and teachings of the parents he did not have. As an adult, he desired to write books for both children and adults that would teach some of the lessons of life he had missed out on as an orphan. He planned to write under the pen name Ule B. Wise, to indicate his desire to teach and inspire. Unfortunately, he passed away before seeing his publishing dreams fulfilled.
Inspired by my father's story I began writing in my youth, beginning with poetry, song lyrics and short stories, followed by hundreds of newspaper columns written in my career as a financial adviser. My weekly articles published by the USA Today network can be found on my blog and in newspapers across the country.
My first published financial book, "21 Financial Myths" was a compilation of some of the best lessons learned from thousands of client interviews in which I discuss the most common misconceptions people have about investing. As I have met with people who in later years are struggling to put together a solid financial plan, I have often been impressed at how much easier their lives would be if they could have begun earlier to learn those life values that naturally lead to success. From this sprung my desire to begin a series of children's books focused on some of these most important values.
The inspiration for "The Gold Egg" came to me early in my marriage as I was starting to build my new business. A recession was going on at the time and a friend questioned the wisdom of starting a business under such difficult circumstances. I responded that “The gold eggs in life are usually found in the nest farthest out on the limb. Those who would have them must be willing to climb out after them, knowing sometimes he may fall, but dusting himself off he climbs up again.” And with that, the idea for this book was born. I continued to work on this special story over the next 30 years, with every phase of my life being incorporated into young Devan’s climb.
When I finally completed “The Gold Egg,” I decided to honor my father by publishing it under his pen name: Ule B. Wise. Additional books will be released about every six months until I have covered the 12 values I have found to be most important. Each book, though written technically for children, is designed to be valuable and enjoyable to all ages. I am looking forward to sharing this journey with you.
