My friends think of me as some kind of hippie - except I have a deep love for glitter and glamour. I make my own kombucha, water kefir, face lotion, salad dressings, deodorant, chocolate magic shell (you've got to try it) and a bunch of other things that raise eyebrows. I'm a USAT age-group triathlete who passionately loves swimming. I have a burning passion to help people meet their goals and win in all aspects of their life. Add that to the fact that I have a pile of backyard hens, and you have a unique concoction.
I wasn't always like this, though. I used to be a sugar addict. I ate all of my Halloween candy in almost one sitting. I was nicknamed "Mountain Dew girl" in high school. I ate Little Debbie Swiss Rolls and Kool-Aid. I thought homemade was microwaving a frozen bagged dinner. I slathered myself in the stinkiest, most endocrine-disrupting smelly lotions and body stuffs I could find. I didn't know and I didn't care.
After I had a kid or two, I wondered about what exactly we were feeding them. Was it good for them? What was this nonsense about high fructose corn syrup? That was the intro drug into a healthy lifestyle. Questions made me research and find out what would work and it helped me to not accept blindly what was being sold on the shelves and told to me by the voices that pushed for status-quo.
I started working things out and sharing what I found out with family and friends. I began to do research for them and help them with their specific health issues.
I decided to pursue that as a career as a health coach. I studied at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and became certified internationally, set up my own health coaching practice, and I was off to the races.
One thing that I kept hearing from friends and clients was that they were overwhelmed. There were so many voices out there telling them what to do - and some were conflicting! They wanted to be healthy, but it was too much. It made them feel like giving up.
That is why I decided to write Just One Thing: Simplifying the Mystery of a Healthy Lifestyle. I don't think your health should be out of reach or that it should be rocket science. I give practical advice for how to get there - no tricks, no craziness. I want it to become your lifestyle. Anyone can do something for 30 days, but I want your quality of life to be exceptional for the rest of your life, not just for a short time. What good is that? Let's run that marathon and run it well.
I believe we all have a right to good health. Yes, trials will come, and when they do, I hope they make us stronger, but I also don't want to invite trouble to the table if we don't have to. I imagine the world being better by touching one person at a time - by giving them back their vitality and health and energy. We are all gifted with a unique set of characteristics that are custom-made for different problems on this earth. We have a purpose in being here. I dream of a world of people who are happy and healthy and can get things done, and well. It would be a game-changer if we saw this kind of change all over! Imagine it. Mentally, spiritually, physically happy people interacting with each other. The world would be radically different.
That's my thing. I'm in it to save the world, one person at a time.
My life motto is, "I never lose. I either win or I learn."
