Robert Adams

Robert Adams, MD, MBA, has lived the kind of life most people only read about.

A former U.S. Navy SEAL, Adams spent 14 years in the Navy—12 of them in the SEAL Teams—before serving 18 years in the U.S. Army. During his military career, he rose to become Command Surgeon for the Army’s elite Delta Force and deployed to Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division.

A third-generation graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Adams later made an unusual decision: he left the SEAL Teams to attend medical school on an Army scholarship, eventually becoming a physician at age forty.

For more than 35 years in family medicine, Dr. Adams delivered babies, treated trauma and disease, cared for military families, and served soldiers in both war and peace. His experiences gave him a rare front-row seat to the limits of human endurance, courage, sacrifice, and survival.

Those experiences now fuel his writing.

Dr. Adams’ books bring readers inside worlds few ever see—from the brutal reality of Navy SEAL Hell Week, to the emotional highs and lows of practicing medicine in both small towns and combat zones, to the personal letters of a Union soldier during the American Civil War.

His books include:

• Six Days of Impossible: Navy SEAL Hell Week — A Doctor Looks Back

• Swords and Saints: A Doctor’s Journey

• My Dear Sara: Civil War Letters 1861–1865

Through gripping storytelling and firsthand insight, Robert Adams gives readers an unforgettable look at what it means to endure, serve, and lead.

5-STARS! As an ex-Navy man, I thought I knew something about the SEAL program. Was I ever wrong. Dr. Adams weaves a story of the exploits of his BUD/S 81 team in a way that is awe inspiring in what it takes to "not ring the bell" and quit. We owe a great debt of gratitude to the men that have pushed through personal barriers to be honored to wear the Trident. Dr. Adams book is a page turner. Yes, you know that it is tough going and that men will drop out, but it makes you want to keep reading as you want to know who will succeed and how can they endure the torture and sleepless nights to finally make it through Hell Week. But that is only the beginning. Other tests lay ahead before they are allowed to call themselves Navy Seals. I enjoyed this book immensely, from the beginning when we learn why Dr. Adams chose to even consider becoming a SEAL to the end when we find out about the special bond that these men share in the short term and throughout the rest of their lives. Hooyah!

Review for Swords and Saints - A Doctor's Journey:

5-STARS! A great book about a unique physician’s journey April 27, 2020

This is a great book about a unique physician and his improbable, patriotic journey as a Navy SEAL, physician (much later in life), medical officer for the Delta Force, and later, a civilian family practice physician. Dr Adams has a pleasant, easily accessible narrative style, and his stories of both military and medical service are compelling. He overcame many obstacles to become a physician at age 40, and he was able to use his knowledge to serve our nation in fine ways. Special Forces medical personnel have an ethos which Dr Adams embodies —- hard work, training, and patriotism, as well as mooch and travel light! This book will appeal to physicians, medical students, military personnel, and general readers. Congratulations to Dr Adams for his fine book and his service.
