Dr. Kris Sargent: Health & Wellness Game-Changer

I have a big personality, a big heart, and a big dream. A dream to solve a billion-person, world-wide problem. Do you think that’s a little impossible? I don’t! I know in my heart that I truly have the answer to a huge problem in the world. I can solve it. That is my daily motivation and passion!

Chronic diseases, like irritable bowel, diabetes, heart disease and auto-immune diseases, are such a scourge to our health and our healthcare system. People get so sick from how they treat their body’s and it doesn’t have to be that way.

I grew up in a home where my parents inspired us to eat healthy and keep moving. Even now, well into their 80s, my mom and dad are active and medication-free! It was actually my mom that introduced me to natural health care at 19 years old—and it really resonated.Looking at the person as a whole, not just a diseased part.

At the time, I already had one foot in the door of medical school with hopes to focus on female healthcare. But a push from Mom’s wisdom to experience what it was like to see a chiropractor, and my thought process took a pretty quick 180. I knew it just felt right!

Turns out I love school and have accomplished plenty of it! Bachelor’s degree in Biology & Psychology, a second Bachelor’s degree in Human Biology, Doctor of Chiropractic, post doctoral Masters of Advanced Clinical Science, and hundreds of post-graduate hours in Functional and clinical nutrition, internal medicine, and chiropractic care.

I was a dancer from a young age and I always struggled with my weight. Body image was a big deal for me. But I started to approach wellness from a healthier perspective.

Finally armed, ready, and able to take a leap into owning her own Functional Medicine and Chiropractic practice, I opened the doors of my practice in 1992 which became Restor Healing Centre in 2007 and is now. She is one of the most experienced Functional Medicine doctors in the country.

Dr Sargent focuses on healing by restoring function through natural methods for conditions like auto-immune, hormone imbalances, Irritable Bowel and digestive issues, weight control. She has two chiropractors in her practice to focus on the musculoskeletal issues and acupuncture.

Dr. Kris describes the difference between traditional medicine and functional medicine like this:
Medical doctors ask, ‘Are you sick yet? If you are, I have drugs and surgery. If you aren’t, I can’t help you.’ While in functional medicine the question is, ‘What do we need to do to prevent you from ever getting sick?’

Dr. Kris says there is a place for traditional medicine and that her practice has a different approach for different timing. “I am not a medical foe. I know medical doctors are necessary. But chronic diseases don’t happen overnight or develop spur of the moment. It all happens over time. From my wellness perspective, I want to prevent the onset of illness.”

A big part of being proactive in the steps toward natural wellness is awareness of our own body and mind. According to Kris, women tend to really recognize when they can’t work at the capacity they need to keep going.

“I would really like to encourage women to pay attention and respond to their body’s signals. If you feel like you are slipping—your periods are off, you’ve gained 10 pounds, you’re not sleeping well—let’s clamp down on the issue before it’s a huge problem! As soon as you realize you have jumped out of the wellness pool and are walking toward the sick pool, you need to figure out how to get yourself back!”

So what is this all about? What does Dr. Kris actually do to obliterate these issues at the root? Simple really. Eat. Drink. Move. Sleep. Think. …WELL!! To stay healthy, Kris says we need to have control of all of these things.

“The top health issue I work with these days is I-feel-like-crap syndrome! It’s running rampant! Hormone imbalances, digestion issues, weight gain, just not feeling good!”

Dr. Kris’s process involves hearing the patients story, gathering a health history from birth to present, running a full blood work up, and presenting a 20-page report outlining exactly what’s going on with different functionalities of the body. She creates a wellness plan and anticipates spending six months to one year as treatment plans evolve, patients grow, and health increases.

Dependent on a patient’s compliance with the program, the staff at Restor Healing have seen incredible transformations. Overall health changes generate drastic improvements to the symptoms that lead people to see Dr. Kris.
