David E. DeMatthews spent the first decade of his career working in the Baltimore City Public Schools and District of Columbia Public Schools as a high school teacher and basketball coach, middle school assistant principal, and central office administrator in special education. David has also worked at the University of Texas at El Paso preparing aspiring principals and superintendents. He has over 40 published peer-reviewed research articles in premiere academic journals, including Educational Administration Quarterly, Teachers College Record, Urban Education, and the Journal of School Leadership. David has also published editorials focused on current events in education in the USA Today, Education Week, Baltimore Sun, Texas Tribune, Houston Chronicle, and many other regional and national media outlets. Currently, David is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Texas at Austin. He also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Special Education. He has won several prestigious awards within his research area and field, including the Jack A. Culbertson Award and the William J. Davis Award from the University Council of Educational Administration.
