Red Johnson

Red Johnson grew up at the northwest corner of Donner Lake, California in what could only be described as a "wilderness family". The closest town was Truckee, CA. six miles east. He was home schooled in the winter by his mother. She also sparked his interest in the pioneers with the stories of Kit Carson, Daniel Boone, and Davy Crockett. Then she showed him where Kit's trail ran across their back yard. She was a prolific writer and that rubbed off on Red. His father had a horse ranch where he broke mustangs he had caught himself on the Nevada range. He hired Nevada cowboys to assist, and their ways rubbed off on Red too. Also, in their back yard was a line shack. There one of the last of the old mountain men spent his winters spinning yarns of tall tales to a red headed 6 old boy.
