Fiona has tribal affiliations with Ngāti Pahauwera (Indigenous Māori, Aotearoa New Zealand), and is the mother of one son who's run off to join the circus.
She always wanted to direct something so in 2003 Fiona started her own company and became the Director of Katoa Ltd. Katoa is the Maori word for 'all' and it came about as the company name when Fiona asked some of her aunties what she should call this new venture. They said she did a little bit of everything and so, just like that, Katoa Ltd was born.
Katoa Ltd undertakes Kaupapa Māori (by Māori, for Māori) research and evaluation with Māori tribes, organisations and communities, as well as with government agencies, district health boards, and philanthropic organisations. A large portion of this work involves the use of mixed or multiple methods research and evaluation in the pursuit of decolonisation, tribal sovereignty, and societal transformation.
Fiona has a PhD from the University of Otago after moving to Dunedin to study psychology so she could find out what was wrong with friends and family. What happened instead was a passion for research and evaluation that's been driving only her crazy ever since.
