Jean Henderson

In everything Jean creates, the simplicity of Nature's spirituality compels her.

She responds to that compulsion by turning her camera towards what resonates within her.

The results are offered as photographic prints that will last for generations. And now, in book form.

A self-taught artist beyond a basic introductory darkroom photography class in college, she fell in love with photography as a 5-year-old. Not allowed to pursue it as a child, though, development of her passion was put off until college.

For years black and white photography was her preferred expression. When the digital age came along, the world of color captured her.

Because prints are her ultimate goal, she spent years teaching herself the craft of printing. She cares deeply about each printed work produced on her professional photo printer. Outside labs are only employed when a print larger than 17x22, or a canvas print, is requested.

Nature, in all her gloriously wide variety, is her studio.

Her primary artistic goal is to be a role model for other mental health clients and their families. She has bipolar disorder, but finding her "A-bility" to reclaim her passion has been the final lifestyle change leading her to “near normalcy”.

Jean’s earliest influence was Richard Avedon’s fashion shots in Vogue magazine which she subscribed to as high school student.

Then she discovered the famous 20th Century photographer Edward Weston. His interest in form and making the commonplace unusual remain with her to this day. To this she adds her interest in texture.

Ansel Adams said, “The negative is the score. The print is the performance.” Photographers have been enhancing negatives using a variety of techniques from the earliest days of the medium. Jean continues to do so using current technology in her lifelong pursuit of the Good, the True, and the Beautiful.

Jean is a member of the Coventry Arts Guild and the Windham Regional Arts Council.

Jean’s first sale resulted in her work being added to the permanent collection of the Akus Gallery of Eastern Connecticut State University in June 2011. Her works are also in private collections across the Northeast and the Midwest.
