H. David Schuringa

H. David Schuringa, B.A., M.A.R., M.Div., Th.M., Ph.D., earned his doctorate in Homiletiek and Praktische Theologie under Prof. Dr. Klaas Runia at the Theologische Universiteit te Kampen. His dissertation is a comprehensive study entitled, "Hearing the Word in a Visual Age: A Practical Theological Consideration of Preaching within the Contemporary Urge to Visualization."

Post-Graduate work in Europe also included advanced studies under Prof. Dr. C. Trimp at the Gereformeerde Theologische Universiteit and conferences with Prof. Dr. W. H. Velema at the Theologische Universiteit Apeldoorn.

Prior to Kampen, he studied at Trinity Christian College, Calvin University, The Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto, Westminster Theological Seminary, The University of Pennsylvania and at Calvin Theological Seminary where he wrote his Master's Thesis entitled, "The Preaching of the Word as a Means of Grace: The Views of Herman Hoeksema and R. B. Kuiper," under Prof. Dr. C. G. Kromminga and in consultation with Prof. H. C. Hoeksema at the Protestant Reformed Seminary.

As a teacher of parishioners, prisoners and future pastors, he taught and led for many years at Westminster Seminary California (Founding Faculty Member) and Crossroad Bible Institute. Schuringa served as an Adjunct Professor at The International Theological Seminary, Chong Shin University, Calvin Seminary and Kuyper College. He also guest lectured at the Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary and Reformed Theological University of Sarospatic in Hungary, and pastored the local church in West Michigan and Southern California.

Before serving as a Research Fellow at NSMC, he worked for the nonprofit, Michigan Campaign for Justice, and subsequently for several years as a (Founding) Commissioner appointee of Gov. Rick Snyder to improve public defense efforts for the poor in the criminal justice system. In Washington D.C. he has presented on Capitol Hill before congressional and senate briefings, as well as before the Michigan Supreme Court.

NSMC is a supple research platform and think tank for the "wetenschappelijke functioneren binnen het spanningsveld tussen theologische theorie-vorming and praxis-handelingen," or, the transaction analysis of the relationship between theory-formation and humanitarian activation. Schuringa is secretary of the Abraham Kuyper Christian Citizen Federation and an associate of the International Leadership Association--a global consortium for theory-praxis research.

+David and Mary lead a contemplative life having lived beside the quiet waters of Minkler Lake in West Michigan for more than two decades. They gratefully enjoy their four married children and 14 living grandchildren. As a practical theologian, Schuringa never ceases to be keenly interested in discovering with God’s people, in the diligent study of God’s Word, with his gifted colleagues, how to live more faithfully in God’s world.
