K L MACRAE

I spent my working career writing memos, reports and academic papers but, despite the desire to write fiction, I could never seem to come up with the right idea for a novel. In 2015, I woke up in the wee, small hours with the idea for a novel about a kick-ass female martial artist literally ringing in my ears. Developing the story into a full-blown movie in my head kept me busy during a long bout of insomnia and the idea for KAT was born. It took me a while to get round to actually putting pen to paper (or fingertips to keyboard, rather), and the story bears little resemblance to the original idea, but my writing dam was well and truly burst and I've spent more time than is probably healthy sitting at my computer since. It certainly keeps me busy, which is good because my irritatingly disobedient body started to fail me in the mid-2000's and I had to give up work as well as my life-long love of dance and martial arts. C'est la vie.

Since that dream in 2015, I've written KAT, Dig Three Graves (the second Kat Farthing novel) and the Aura Shaper trilogy (A Shaper's Promise, A Shaper's Birthright and A Shaper's Farewell). To try to keep things straightforward for readers who aren't so keen on the other genre, I'm using two author names: Karen MacRae for fantasy and K L MacRae for contemporary fiction. So don't say you haven't been warned! Anna is not a kick-ass martial artist and Kat can't Shape to save herself. What's Shaping? I guess you'll have to read A Shaper's Promise to find out :)
