Iris Mushin

Iris Mushin is a medical education expert and the founder of the Baylor MedRAP program at Baylor College of Medicine. She developed MedRAP while pursuing her MBA, as her husband completed his surgical training at Baylor College of Medicine, where she directed the program for 25 years. In 1993, Iris published a landmark article in JAMA Internal Medicine, "Developing a Resident Assistance Program: Beyond the Support Group Model," which focused on preventing issues that house staff were likely to face, rather than offering support only after problems arose.

Her goal in designing the program was to enhance the well-being of medical residents by addressing their stress and burnout through an improved training environment, professional growth, and increased effectiveness as physicians, which in turn benefits hospital efficiency and patient care.

Her latest book, Prescription for Burnout (2024), presents a structured approach to implementing the MedRAP program, addressing the needs of all healthcare clinicians transitioning into clinical practice. Despite changes in medical programs, stress and burnout are rising, making the well-being and resilience of clinicians an ongoing public health concern.
