Julia Nevarez

Julia Nevárez obtained her PhD in Environmental Psychology in New York City where she resides in the Harlem neighborhood. She is interested in understanding how we live in cities and how cities develop and change. Her work includes theoretical and empirical analyses of public space, urban theory, and climate change that is interdisciplinary. She was born in Puerto Rico. Ironically, when she was completing her last book: "Governing Disaster in Urban Environments: Climate Change Preparation and Adaption after Hurricane Sandy," Hurricane María stroke the island. That experience reassured her on the importance to prepare and adapt to climate change. Her next book "The Urban Library: Public Space and Urban Development," will include considerations on how the public library can be the space where pressing issues are researched and discussed, including those about climate change impacts and preparedness. Anecdotally, the intrinsic drive of libraries to preserve knowledge has made them consider strategies to withstand climate change impacts that could jeopardize their collections. Living in cities today requires sharing conversations and knowledge within informed communities of solidarity.
