Kate Sullivan is a writer and journalist with a passion for writing about Los Angeles and music. Kate served as L.A. Weekly's first and only female Music Editor and Columnist, and her work has appeared in Los Angeles Magazine, Spin, Rolling Stone, Seventeen, Teen People, City Pages, and the New York Times Magazine.
Jonathan Gold wrote of her: "[Sullivan] is an amazingly graceful critic whose essays about the White Stripes and the Brill Building, but especially about how pop music functions in our lives, may still be read in 50 years.” Kate was born and raised in L.A., life experience that profoundly informed her work as the primary writer, editor, and researcher for This Is (Not) L.A. Cocreated with Jen Bilik, the book disproves myths and cliches about Los Angeles, while building a nuanced vision of this misunderstood metropolis, which Kate once described in the L.A. Weekly as "a city whose beautiful myths are lies, but whose ugly truth can beautiful."
She has been honored by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies and the Los Angeles Press Club, and has been anthologized in the Best Music Writing Series. Kate has contributed to National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, KPCC’s Offramp, KCRW's Sounds L.A., and was host and coproducer for Pop Vultures, a groundbreaking public radio show coproduced by American Public Media and championed by Ira Glass. Since 2011 Kate has been an editor at Knock Knock, where she has helped create all manner of witty books, journals, and more.
