Sig Cohen

After a career in the foreign service (with overseas tours in Bangladesh, India, Germany and the UK) and work as a fundraiser, mediator, and community organizer, the last role Sig Cohen ever expected was as author. However, mediating at the District of Columbia Superior Court and in private practice as a divorce and elder mediator prepared him to co-author with Carolyn M. Parr “Love’s Way: Living Peacefully with Your Family as Your Parents Age.” (January 2019).

In case after case, Sig and Carolyn witnessed families in which the adult children’s concern for their parents’ safety collided with their parents’ need for independence. Caregiving duties and financial matters were also sources of concern and intergenerational friction. Every case told a story and offered lessons that apply to many of us.

Sig resides with his wife Susan in Washington DC. They have two children and three grandchildren. As a ‘remote caregiver’ he witnessed the isolation older single adults experience and like many of his peers instances of ageism. He hopes that Love’s Way will help families avoid some of the mistakes he has seen and close the gap among generations.
