Jan Marshall

Having spent 30 years in the IT industry Jan Marshall had reached a senior level in her professional field, earning a six-figure income.

After an interstate move in 2012, Jan looked to online dating to find a companion with whom to explore her new location. Unfortunately, this developed into an online romance scam where Jan lost more than $260,000 over several months. This lead to grief, shame, financial devastation, and a shattered self-image. Jan credits having her Ragdoll cat called Cookie with helping her get through the tough recovery process, lasting over two years. Much of Romance Scam Survivor: the whole sordid story was written as part of her recovery.

Early in 2015 she set up a support group for other victims, created a blog, and became an Ambassador for the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN). She regularly speaks to the press, TV, and community groups. She has become the face of an internet scam victim in Australia and is an active advocate for other victims. She also provides peer counseling to other victims and their families.

Jan comments that going public “allowed me to regain my self-respect” because she was no longer hiding in shame about her experience. Through these activities, she discovered her writing ability, and after this book, wishes to keep on writing about other topics of interest.

In her spare time, Jan paints and draws, and enjoys time walking and swimming. She remains single, having not ventured back to online dating.
