Born in the Midwest, Abigail Colson grew up the second oldest child in a family of eleven. After college, she trained as a court reporter, working across the Midwest and Northeast until she married. Shortly after the birth of her first child, she began working in financial planning.
In 1987, she moved to the Nashville area where her family prospered and added another child to the family. Abigail soon completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy, entering pharmaceutical sales. Later, she would leave that lucrative position to be a stay-at-home mother for her teenage children.
The economic impact of becoming a single-income family became a catalyst for the escalation of her husband's abusive behavior. Dedicated to preserving her marriage, Abigail began seeing a professional counselor against her husband's wishes.
Through multiple therapy sessions, Abigail concluded that she was in an abusive intimate partner relationship. Because her husband was unwilling to do the necessary work to save the marriage, she began taking steps to protect herself. Abigail eventually filed an Order of Protection to which her husband filed for the dissolution of their 30-year marriage. The marriage ended in divorce.
Now, Abigail devotes her time and considerable expertise to helping traumatized women and children navigate the confusing and emotionally-draining separation/divorce process. Her years as a court reporter, combined with her financial savvy, and experience in the business world combine to make her a formidable advocate for women in need.
A committed Christian, Abigail is restoring a legacy family home for use as a transitional home for women and children who need compassionate refuge and a safe place to heal, learn and grow. Her faith drives her to seek change in the legal system on behalf of domestic violence survivors and to counsel those survivors about how to reclaim their lives and their freedom.
Journey to My Heart's Desire is her first book.
