Ryane E. Englar

Ryane E. Englar, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline Practice), is a veterinarian, educator, author, and Professor of Practice at the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine, where she serves as Executive Director of Clinical and Professional Skills. A 2008 graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, she has devoted her career to helping future veterinarians develop the clinical, communication, and relationship-centered skills that allow them to care for both ends of the leash.

Dr. Englar’s academic career has taken her from Cornell University to founding faculty roles at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine, with a chapter at Kansas State University in between, where she built clinical skills coursework for first- and second-year veterinary students. She joined the University of Arizona in 2020 as part of the founding faculty who helped build a new veterinary program from the ground up. In July 2026, the College of Veterinary Medicine achieved full accreditation—an extraordinary milestone in a journey she was privileged to help shape from its earliest days.

Teaching remains at the heart of Dr. Englar’s professional life. Her work emphasizes relationship-centered care, communication, clinical skills, simulation-based education, psychological safety, and the creation of learning environments in which students have opportunities to practice, reflect, make mistakes, and grow. She is especially passionate about preparing veterinarians not simply to be “Day-One Ready,” but to remain curious, compassionate, adaptable, and connected to the people and animals they serve.

Dr. Englar is the author of numerous veterinary textbooks and educational resources, including works focused on the physical examination, clinical skills, and veterinary communication. Her writing reflects the same philosophy that shapes her teaching: technical knowledge matters, but so does how we communicate it, how we experience it, and how we care for one another along the way.

In 2024, Dr. Englar’s life and writing took an unexpected turn when profound vision loss led to bilateral corneal transplantation. That experience became the foundation for Postcards from Life’s Passenger Seat: Reflections on Sight, Identity, and Belonging after Corneal Transplantation, a photographic memoir exploring what happens when the life we recognize changes—and how we find our way forward when there is no map for the journey.

Whether she is writing for veterinary students, colleagues, patients’ families, or readers navigating change in their own lives, Dr. Englar believes deeply in the power of story, connection, and belonging.

Outside the classroom and away from the keyboard, she is a competitive ballroom dancer, artist, photographer, and lifelong believer that some of life’s most meaningful lessons emerge from the places we never intended to go.
