Born in 1978, Rocío Alejandro trained as a graphic designer before finding her true calling in children’s illustration. A lifelong learner, her artistic journey has been shaped by workshops in sumi-e, bookbinding, and color perception, as well as her studies in the Diploma in Children’s and Young Adult Literature at UNSAM.
She has illustrated for numerous Argentine and international publishers. Her artwork has been selected for prestigious global exhibitions, including Sharjah (UAE), Golden Pinwheel (Shanghai), and the Bratislava Biennial. In 2017, her book La huerta de Simón won the 10th Compostela Prize for Illustrated Books, followed by the Cuatro Gatos Award in 2018.
Her unique creative process bridges traditional craftsmanship and digital assembly. She begins by hand-carving custom stamps and printing individual elements using traditional etching inks. Characters are built anatomically from multiple distinct stamps—such as the head, torso, and limbs—which allows them to move fluidly throughout the story. Once all the components and backgrounds are stamped, she pieces them together digitally, much like solving a puzzle, to craft the final illustration.
