Col Robert Manns

My first reaction to my publicist's request was, "What do I know about western novels?" He replied, "You don't have to know anything. Just tell the story." So, I did. The result was The Stockdales. It included fights (both fists and guns), a tiny love interest, and the obligatory right-over-wrong in a cliched showdown. Readers indicated that they liked it. So, I wrote a sequel, as I found the exercise interesting (I did a lot of research). People encouraged me to write more. That entailed more research. So far, there are eight novels, all tied to the original--The Stockdales--in some manner. I also learned that a good editor is invaluable. Tell the story, but tell it right. When writing my westerns, I try to make my stories realistic, entertaining, and as factual as possible--more and more research.

I am currently trying to find a marketing scheme that works, I think my kind of book would appeal to air travelers. They are somewhat sophisticated, and they like quick reads that might well be finished during their flight.

As for my background, I had a lot of fun growing up in Long Beach, sailing, surfing, and being a pleasantly privileged kid who became an Air Force officer. I flew all over the world and used my experiences to find a guiding philosophy for life. I did, and I shared my experience with the world in an autobiography entitled: Excuses, However Valid, Do Not Accomplish the Mission.
