James W. Warren

James W. Warren has been a full-time genealogical and historical researcher, writer, speaker, editor, and publisher for the past thirty-seven years. He coauthored Your Guide to the Family History Library and the newly released Empowered by Hope: The Story of a Stage 4 Prostate Cancer Patient, His Doctor, and a Woman’s Perspective. Jim was first diagnosed with prostate cancer at age sixty in 2008, which turned aggressive (stage 4 with metastases to bones) in 2021. He continues to work, focused on book editing, design, layout, illustration, indexing, and small-run publishing for clients.

Jim lived his first fifty-five years in his native St. Paul, Minnesota. After many years of making ever-more- frequent and longer research trips to work at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, he and Sharon gave up and moved there. More than twenty years later, most of the library’s billions of records are now digitized and available worldwide online, but Salt Lake City remains their home base.

Jim is a former president of the Irish Genealogical Society International and of the Minnesota Genealogical Society. He served on the boards of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) and of the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), and as FGS Vice President-Administration. He was a recipient of the David S. Vogels Jr. Award for career contributions to FGS and its six hundred member societies, and of the Association of Professional Genealogists’ Grahame T. Smallwood Jr. Award of Merit.

Jim is the owner and publisher of Scattered Leaves Press, an independent full-service publishing company specializing in high-quality nonfiction: biographies, memoirs, essay collections, family histories, and guidebooks in small runs or on Amazon KDP.
