How do you decide whether to have your breasts and ovaries removed because you *probably* will get cancer someday?

Probably Someday Cancer is about how and why I made the agonizing decision to have risk-reducing surgeries after discovering I have a BRCA2 mutation.

The mutation gives me a 69 percent risk of breast cancer by age 80, compared to a 12 percent risk for the general population. I tried chemoprevention and enhanced screenings before opting for surgery, only to find a surprise in the pathology from my preventative procedure.

Probably Someday Cancer is the winner of the 2017 Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference book manuscript competition.

With research and interviews woven into my personal story, Probably Someday Cancer can help anyone facing hereditary risk of breast and ovarian cancer feel less alone and make informed decisions.

I worked as a journalist for 21 years, including 13 years at The Dallas Morning News, where I wrote about issues including homelessness, housing, mental health and child welfare. My work has appeared in many publications including Seventeen, the Texas Observer, Tangled Locks and Typehouse.

I earned an MFA in creative writing from The University of Arkansas at Monticello in 2022.
