David Begelman is a graduate of the HighSchool of Music and Art in New York City and studed art under Mark Rothko. He trained as a ballet dancer in New York City and toured in summer stock in Maine and New Jersey. He attended The Actor's Workshop in New York City, studying with Paul Mann and Lloyd Richards. Theatrical roles included the Ragpicker in Jean Giradoux's "The Madwoman of Chaillot," Menelaus in the Off-Broadway production on "The Trojan Women," Big Daddy in Tennessee Williams' "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof," Martin Luther in John Osbourne's "Luther," Guido in John Lewis Carlino's "High Sign," the Devil in separate productions of "Don Juan in Hell," Don Juan in the Connecticut Stage production of the same play, Henry II in Jan Anouilh's "Becket," and Otis H. Baker in "The Andersonville Trial." He appeared as Count Dracula in separate plays authored by Dean and Balderson and Ted Tiller, Tajomaru in "Rashomon," Peter in the Actor's Repertory Company of Edward Albee's "The Zoo Story," the narrator in "Peter and the Wolf," the excorcist Azrielke Ben Haddas in the road company of Ansky's "The Dybbuk," Henry II in "The Lion in Winter," and Benny Silverman in Jeffrey Sweet's "The Value of Names." Shakespearean roles include featured ones in "As You Like It" and "The Winter's Tale," Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice," Lear in "King Lear," Petruchio in "The Taming of the Shrew," Prospero in "The Tempest" and Theseus and Oberon in the Connecticut Stage production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Singing roles include the Duke of Coffin Castle in James Thurber's "The Thirteen Clocks," King Gamma in Gilbert and Sullivan's "Princess Ida," and Sir in "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd." He has done concert readings of the poetry of Dylan Thomas, including "A Child's Christmas in Wales." He and pianist performed Tennyson's "Enoch Arden" (with the original score by Richard Strauss) for the Litchfield Performing Arts. He was a member of the Connecticut Critics Circle, the film and drama critic for The Citizen News of New Fairfield, Connecticut and theater critic for The Danbury News-Times of Danbury, Connecticut. More recently, he has performed in two separate multi-art presentations for the production group Love/Art/Play.
