The author is a serial adventurer who has written for assorted magazines. This is his first novel, aiming to inspire others to grasp the great feat of the first flight over Everest in 1933.
Even Higher Than Everest is entirely true but Almond has used fictional view points to cover the evolving expedition from inception, through intricate planning and financing, all the way to the heated plains of India to await good weather over the distant mountains.
Almond, formerly a private pilot, has travelled by horseback across Europe and North America, sailed square-rig ships to Hawaii, steamed through the USA in the Flying Scotsman, sought for gold in Africa, set up restaurants for the glitterati in Sardinia, amongst other exploits. He's now recording these for a book to appear later this year.
Above all, Almond feels that today's news is too often grim and doleful so in this book should lift the more adventurous among you to enjoy this, the most stylish and colourful of Himalayan expeditions, and return you to optimism!
